New report reveals female artists received only one in five Grammy nominations and wins over the last EIGHT years

Female artists have received only one in five Grammy nominations and wins over the last eight years, according to a new report.

Research conducted by Akas, found female artists have received only one in five Grammy nominations and wins over the last eight years.

Men led the nominations in 94 per cent of the Grammy categories between 2017 and 2024, with women accounting for 19 per cent of those nominated and winning awards in that time.

Global stars Taylor Swift, 35, Miley Cyrus, 32, and Billie Eilish, 23, won three of the major awards in 2024 - including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year - but the report found only 24 per cent of nominees and 32 per cent of winners were women across the 94 categories last year.

The Missing Voices Of Women In Music And Music News report revealed despite the #MeToo movement being at its height in 2018, the analysis shows that when it comes to the Grammys, 2018 was the worst year for women and all female bands, with them registering both the lowest number of nominations, 14 per cent, and the lowest proportion of wins 11 per cent.

The report found a number of Grammy Award categories have not featured any female winners for several years, including the Producer of the Year (non-classical) prize.

Winners of the gong over the past eight years include Pharrell Williams, 51, Greg Kurstin, 55, Andrew Watt, 35, and Billie Eilish's brother, Finneas O'Connell, 27.

Jack Antonoff, who produced Taylor Swift's album Midnights, won the award in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Last year, Ms Swift was nominated for six awards and made Grammy history as the first person to win Album of the Year four times after picking up the prize for Midnights, her 10th album.

However solo female singers and all-female bands have also been missing from the Metal Performance and Orchestral Performance categories for the last eight years.

In 2018 the hashtag #GrammysSoMale was trending when women won only 11 out of the total 84 Grammy's awarded.

Later that year Grammys chief Neil Portnow told reporters backstage he thinks women need to 'step up' to become part of the industry.

Since, artists have called out the awards for their lack of representation.

In 2019 Dua Lipa called out Mr Portnow during her acceptance speech by stating that she was honored 'to be nominated alongside so many incredible female artists this year.'

She continued: 'I guess this year we really stepped up.'
