Gwyneth Paltrow shocked the world back in 2004 when she and ex-husband Chris Martin named their daughter Apple.

While Paltrow has always maintained that her Coldplay crooner ex came up with the name, there may have been another source of inspiration behind it.

According to Bobby and Peter Farrelly, who directed Paltrow's 2001 comedy hit Shallow Hal, Peter's daughter is also named Apple and was a toddler during filming.

During an interview on The Jess Cagle Show, the Farrelly brothers were asked about the name.

'You have a daughter who's a rising actress, and I was shocked to see that her name is Apple — possibly the original Apple,' cohost Julia Cunningham pointed out.

'I was thinking, did that name seep into Gwyneth Paltrow's brain during Shallow Hal?'

Peter responded, 'Apple was a baby when we did Shallow Hal. Gwyneth has never given us credit for that!'

Back in 2004, Paltrow credited her ex-husband for naming Apple.

'When we were first pregnant, her daddy said, "If it’s a girl I think her name should be Apple." It sounded so sweet, and it conjured such a lovely picture for me, you know,' she told Oprah Winfrey.

'Apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical, and I just thought it sounded so lovely.'

She also addressed the controversy that the name conjured up at the time.

'I found it surprising, because there are people named Rose or Lily or Ivy or June. You know, lots of pretty nouns,' Paltrow said.

Despite Shallow Hal potentially inspiring her daughter's name, Paltrow has called it her least favorite film

The actress starred alongside Jack Black in the 2001 rom-com, in which she played obese woman Rosemary who is seen as a more slimmer version of herself by Black's character Hal Larson after he is hypnotized.

But Paltrow wasn't a fan of her own acting in the motion picture, as was revealed in a video for Netflix in which she quizzed her assistant, Kevin Keating, about how well he knows her.

She also said that she found it 'disturbing' how terribly she was treated when heavier.

After asking him what her 'least favorite performance' was, he replied: 'I would say it would be Shallow Hal.' Paltrow replied: 'Exactly.'

He replied: 'I'm not sure who told you to do that one, but it wasn't me. I wasn't there working for you. Not around for that.'

She started laughing, and then said: 'That was before your time. See what happened? Disaster.'

Paltrow wore a fat suit to portray Rosemary.

Previously she had admitted feeling 'humiliated' when she walked through a hotel wearing the outfit and 'no one would make eye contact' with her.
